La Traviata to Bring 2012
Sorry you’re only hearing this now. I’ve been cleaning my room. I organized all my shelves and wound up with an entire row of opera books and DVDs. That was fun! Anyway, Traviata ended a little while ago. I really enjoyed this performance. When Calas played Violetta in the fifties, she was noted to be singing “unusually” and lacking “tonal beauty”. When asked...

La Traviata
Tomorrow, on BBC 3, is a radio encore of La Traviata at 1:00 pm, from the Royal Opera House in London. Tomorrow, I’m going to listen, then post a review along with a This Year in Opera Post to commemorate 2011. The encore stars Piotr Beczala and Ailyn Perez (Stephen Costello’s wife) as the lovers Alfredo and Violetta. Simon Keenlyside sings Germont, who tears the couple apart....

Love, Loss, and What They Wore: The Enchanted...
Let me just start with saying, I think this is one of my better titles. Do you agree? Let’s get down to the nitty gritty of this post. I was fortunate enough to see The Enchanted Island in the open dress rehearsal on Wednesday. And just a quick thank you for Maryann Ford, (@fordo) who shared the experience with me and made it 100 times better. I was even able to convert a Broadway buff...

Merry Christmas Opera Lovers
Good morning, opera lovers. This grand old holiday season is fast upon and this time of year is a happy, festive time no matter what you celebrate. Now while this time of year has a much deeper meaning, one of the defining factors of December is the giving and receiving of gifts. And while it may feel good to receive it feels even better to give. Great, now I sound like a kindergarten teacher....

La Fille du Regiment
Sorry, once again for being so late with this review. I volunteered to help with the church Christmas Pageant so my job is to help control kids aged 4 to 7. I love to help but that took a chunk out of last evening, so I couldn’t post a review.    La Fille du Regiment was on Monday. I hope you got a chance to listen to those THROUGH THE ROOF high C’s, done so nicely. Brownlee was...

Levine Bows Out For A While
Breaking news from the Met. Maestro James Levine has bowed out of conducting for the remainder of the season (He had a few Ring Cycles on tap) and for the 2012-2013 season. He will be replaced with Fabio Luisi. Gosh that man works hard.    His cancellation is due to a fall he suffered over the summer while on vacation, causing problems to his spine. He underwent surgery and is currently in...

La Scala and Madama Butterfly
So, sorry for those who were waiting for a Madama Butterfly review, sorry to be so late, but I was swallowed up by La Scala buzz. I’m sure you can understand.     So, Don Giovanni started right after my lunch. Thanks school, for your great opera sensitive scheduling. So, I had my IPod pressed against my ear as I walked to English class. Today, we had some Shakespeare presenters. I...

WQXR
So, I didn’t listen to Rodelinda. I got my Christmas tree instead. But, I heard on the radio that at 5ive this evening on WQXR, there is an interview with Angela Gheorghiu… This will be interesting. I’ll have a recap after the chat.

To Listen or not to Listen...
So, as many of you know, today begins the Met’s famous series of operas transmitted over the radio to the public. Today we hear Rodelinda. I am having a moral dilemma though. Should I listen to Rodelinda and provide another review? I feel that I should give this opera a second chance. I think I might listen today, but I’m not sure whether to post a review. Tell me what you think....
